- In Patricia Killelea's poem about the police shooting an innocent deer in the streets of Oakland i think that it is very interesting to look at the usage of words that begin with the letters "s" or "w". She uses them in two different ways. One she puts them close together in a sentence for example "soft steps my mother spoke" and then two lines later it says, " the warm, wobbly drink of this living so wild-fought her." The other way that she uses words that begin with the letter "s" or "w" is by repeating words that begin with these letter in back to back sentence's such as, "Running the fawn shakes off bullets, running the fawn shakes off concrete." This helps her get across her message of the positive usage of this by repeating the shakes in these back to back sentences. The negative usage has the fawn wobble off into dawn and wobble off into worlds.

When I read this poem for the first time, I didn't even think about half of the different symbols, meanings, and word choices that we had discussed in class. But after we went over this poem, I realized that there were a lot of elements in this poem that made it really interesting and meaningful. Analyzing this poem was like making new discoveries that I didn't get to uncover the first time. I think after analyzing this poem, I liked it even more because there is so much going on in this poem and it made me be more aware of what to look for in future poems.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting poem. I too was confused when I first read this poem. The poem is packed with hidden meanings as you pointed out. To me when Professor Willie explained the poem it made it much more interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe analysis oh how Patricia Killelea uses alliteration to convey certain words to stand out is significant to pay attention to for it provides more emotion to the poem. The author uses the repetition of 's' in "soft steps my mother spoke" to get across that mother was warm and comforting towards the fawn. I agree that the author tries to make the fawn seem innocent in the way it was wrongfully killed. The usage of 'w' portrays the fawn being infantile and that it relies on the warmness from her comforting aura that her mother provides for her daughter.
